7.) GI Flashcards
Narrowing of the opening from the stomach to the first part of the small intestine known as the duodenum, due to enlargement (hypertrophy) of the muscle surrounding this opening, which spasms when the stomach empties.

Pyloric Stenosis
Narrowing (stenosis) of the opening from the stomach to the first part of the small intestine known as the duodenum, due to enlargement (hypertrophy) of the muscle surrounding this opening (the pylorus, meaning “gate”), which spasms when the stomach empties.
Often used to describe a symptom complex with 4 characteristics: (1) steatorrhea, (2) general malnutrition, (3) abdominal distention, and (4) secondary vitamin deficiencies.

Celiac Disease
Often used to describe a symptom complex with 4 characteristics:
- steatorrhea (fatty, foul, frothy, bulky stools)
- general malnutrition
- abdominal distention
- secondary vitamin deficiencies.
A malabsorptive disorder that results from decreased mucosal surface area. Usually due to extensive resection of the small intestine.

- ) GERD 4.) Hirschsprung Disease
- ) Celiac Disease 6.) Short Bowel Syndrome
Short Bowel Syndrome
Primary defect is aganglionic megacolon (portion of the intestine is lacking ganglion cells) resulting in a loss of the rectosphincteric reflex.
- ) Pyloric Stenosis 2.) GER
- ) GERD 4.) Hirschsprung Disease
- ) Celiac Disease 6.) Short Bowel Syndrome
Hirschsprung Disease
Permanent intestinal intolerance to dietar wheat and related proteins that produces mucosal lesions in genetically susceptible individuals.
