6P: Pedigree analysis of monogenic disorders Flashcards
Genome
Total genetic material of a cell or an organism
Gene
DNA sequence encoding functional molecules (mRNA, tRNA, rRNA, miRNAs)
Allele
Variant of a gene
Multiple allelism
Gene has many alleles in the population
Wild allele
Most frequent allele of a gene in the population
Locus
Position of a gene in the chromosome
Genotype
Set of alleles that make up genetic constitution, either at all loci, or more typically at a single locus
Homozygote
A person has two identical alleles
Heterozygote
A person has two different alleles (one normal, one mutant)
Complex (compound) heterozygote
A person with two different mutant alleles
Hemizygote
A person carries only a single copy of a gene
Phenotype
Observable expression of a genotype
Dominant
Is expressed even in heterozygote form
Recessive
Is expressed only in homozygote form
Codominant
Both different alleles are expressed
