6.Learning,Memory and addiction Flashcards
Describe Putative role of long term potentiation in creating short term memories.
it helps to strengthen an existing synapse
BE ABLE TO give an example of how ionotropic and metabotropic responses are important for the induction of long term potentiation
Ionotropic AMPA response and metabotropic NMDA response to glutamate occurs during induction of LTP
Define synaptic plasticity
its when both short and long term memories are stored by altering synaptic activity within the brain
Describe retrograde amnesia
Short term memory is lost. typical in a trauma to head, when you can’t remember the accident event
Describe the anterograde amnesia
Short term memory is okay, but can’t consolidate or make long term memories.
Describe how dementia is different than amnesia
Dementia is associated with impaired memory but also includes impaired cognition that amnesia doesn’t have.
Describe the function of limbic system with respect to creation of emotions and motivation/reward systems
The limbic system has the amygdala that is important in emotional processing and negative emotions are generated as punishment and positive emotions are generated as motivational /reward system
Describe the importance of dopamine in the brains reward system
the reward system is activated by the dopaminergic neurone so exogenous activation of this system with dopamine can give the feeling of well being
Explain the cycle by which activities or drugs are thought to become addictive.
it goes from liking it to wanting it to needing it
