6.9 - Transmissions Flashcards
What else can be used in a control run alongside cables?
Chains
What are chain drives suitable for?
Power transmitting with large spaces between the axles
What is the minimum number of of teeth on a chain wheel and why?
12, as chain wear will be too high.
How is the chain in a trim system tensioned?
A chain tightener
What are couplings used for?
Used to connect two shafts together
What are the three classes of couplings?
Solid
Moveable/disconnectable
Safety
What does a solid coupling provide?
A rigid connection between two shafts.
What is a moveable coupling used for?
To connect two shafts when they’re not completely aligned.
What is a Spur gear?
A straight toothed gear wheel, teeth can be external or internal
What are Helical gears?
Teeth are angled, create an axial load on their respective bearings.
What is a rack and pinion?
Transmits rotational energy to linear energy
What is a bevel gear?
Transmits energy through intersecting shafts at different angles.
On a herringbone year, what is the max angle of the teeth?
20 deg
What is backlash?
The clearance between teeth and mesh, allows for expansion
What is meshing?
The point where the teeth of the gears meet.
