What are envelopes used for?
Re-covering aircraft sections
How should seams be oriented on aircraft?
Either for-and-aft of the aircraft or along the bias.
What is a balloon seam?
Also known as the French Fell, edges of fabric are folded back on each other and then sewn together.
When can a lap seam be used?
When the manufacturer specifies to use it.
Why must there be sufficient excess fabric when using an overhand stitch?
So it can be turned under itself before the sewing is started.
Where and why is beeswax used?
Threads, and it reduced the risk of damaging the fabric and increasing stitch holes size.
What type of chord is used when stringing?
Flax Chord
What is used to attach fabric to a metal surface?
Dope/adhesive
Why do we have drain holes in fabric?
To stop metal corrosion and fabric rotting
What is a wood frame inspection holes?
Square/circular frame at required position, need to dope a new fabric patch on after each inspection.
How would you repair a straight tear in a fabric covering?
A Herringbone Stitch
How are jagged tears/holes in a fabric covering repaired?
Darning
What are two common man-made fibres?
Polyester fibre
Glass-fibre
What is the purpose of doping fabrics?
Waterproofing
Air proofing
Light proofing
In a sprayshop , where must the extractor fan be placed?
At floor level, as the vapours produced are heavier than air.
