6.9 enzymes & digestion Flashcards
where are the 2 types of amylase produced?
salivary glands & pancreas
what does the amylases do?
hydrolyses polysaccharides to disaccharides
what are the 3 types of membrane-bound disaccharides? what are their hydrolysed products?
maltase: maltose -> glucose + glucose
sucrase: sucrose -> glucose + fructose
lactase: lactose -> glucose + galactose
describe the physical breakdown of food during digestion.
- food is broken down into smaller pieces by the teeth & churned by the muscles in the stomach wall
which 3 types of peptidases are used for protein digestion?
- endopeptidases
- exopeptidases
- dipeptidases
what does endopeptidases do?
hydrolyses peptide bonds between amino acids in the central region of the polypeptide
what does exopeptidases do?
hydrolyses peptide bonds on the terminal amino acids at the end of polypeptide chains
what does dipeptidases do?
hydrolyses bonds between dipeptides to amino acids
