6.9 - Enzymes And Digestion Flashcards
Define digestion
Large molecules are hydrolysed by enzymes into small molecules
Acronym for main organs in the digestive system
Once - oesophagus
Stan - stomach
Incremated - Ileum
Large - large intestine
Raisins - rectum
Stored - salivary glands
Prematurely - pancreas
Function of the oesophagus
Food from mouth to stomach
Function of stomach
(3)
- Muscular sac with inner layer
- Produces enzymes
- Stored and digests food
Function of ileum
- Inner walls folded
- Millions of tiny projections (microvilli) provide large SA
- Absorbs digested products into bloodstream
Function of large intestine
Absorbs water from secretion form many digestive glands
Function of rectum
Stores faeces and removed via anus by egestion
Function of salivary glands
- Contains amylase
- Hydrolyse starch to maltose near mouth
Function of pancreas
- Pancreatic juice below stomach
- Juice contains protease, lipase and amylase
What does carbohydrase do?
Hydrolyse carbohydrates to monosaccharides
What does lipase do?
Hydrolyse lipids to glycerol and fatty acids
What does protease do?
Hydrolyse proteins to amino acids
