What are the normal operating Temps for a catalytic converter?
Ranges between 1300-1600 degrees internally and about 1000 degrees externally.
They may also easily exceed 1600 degrees when the engine is in poor operating condition, operating under severe load, or has misfiring cylinders.
At what distance will apparatus be positioned for a vehicle fire?
At least 50 feet from the front, ideally 100. No closer than 100 feet from the rear.
How many landlines will be used in the extinguishment of a vehicle fire and what is the priority of placement?
For extensively involved vehicles, 2 1.5” handlines. First will be directed to the passenger compartment, the second will be directed to the fuel storage area to cool the fuel tank.
Why is it imperative that the power to an electric or hybrid vehicle be cut immediately upon arrival at an accident or fire?
After the system is dumped, the capacitors and electrical components may still be energized for an additional 5-10 minutes.
Metros CNG buses contain-
7 CNG tanks that operate at 3600 PSI (3400 cold- 4000 PSI warm)
Each tank is 120” long and 15.9” in diameter weighing 269 lbs.
They are plastic with a carbon glass fiber wrap.
What are the safety devices present on a CNG bus?
8 pressure relief devices on the roof area. These devices will activate at 5400 PSI, or when the tank is heated to 200 degrees.
Additionally, there are 4 methane sensors, 2 in the tank compartment area and 2 in the engine compartment. They alert for trace and significant leaks, the latter will shut down the engine.
For fires, there is an extinguishing agent that will be released when temperatures reach 280 degrees, or it can be manually activated by the driver.
Where is the shutoff for a CNG metro bus?
The shutoff lever is located inside the fueling compartment door on the right rear portion of the bus.
What are the special considerations for CNG?
CNG is lighter than air.
Flash point of 560 degrees
Remove ignition sources 100’ for minor leaks, 300’ for major.
CNG is non-toxic, but heavy concentrations will displace oxygen in confined spaces.
TIC’s operate in one of 2 modes, they are-
Low and High sensitivity.
High Sensitivity operates at temperatures below 300 degrees; low sensitivity is anything above 300 degrees. Low will be indicted by showing an L on the screen.
Hydrant drops
Less than 10%- 3 times the current flow
11-15%- 2 times the current flow
16-25%- 1 times, or equal to the current flow
Greater than 25%- Less than the current flow
Members are required to wear lifejackets when what distance from an incident involving water?
When operating within 10 feet of water members must wear a proper fitting PFD and will work in teams of at least 2.
No turnout gear or helmets will be worn within 20 feet.
What is a confined space?
A space large enough and so confined that a person can enter and perform work; and has limited or restricted means for entry or exit.
In general, what concentration of dust is considered flammable?
If the concentration of dust obscures vision at a distance of 5 feet or less it may be within its flammable range.
Apparatus shall be positioned at what distance for Confined Space Rescues, what distance for Trench Rescues?
No closer than 100’ for Confined space
No Closer than 200’ for Trench rescue.
Both instances apparatus will be shut down.
Eliminate sources of vibration for 500’ in all directions for a trench rescue.
Describe the Streetcar Power Supply system
Street cars are powered by electricity taken from the Overhead Catenary system(OCS) conveyed through a pantograph on the roof of the streetcar.
Traction Power Sub-stations (TPSS) take in 13,000 volts AC from PEPCO and convert it to 750 volts DC which is carried in the catenary lines approximately 20’ above grade.
Rescuers must maintain a distance of at least 10’ from the catenary lines at all times when energized.
