6.5 Variability of chromosomes Flashcards
What are sister chromatids?
Identical copies of DNA formed by the replication of a chromasome
What is the name of the shorter arms on a chromosome (top)?
p arms
What is the name of the longer arms on a chromosome (bottom)?
q arms
What is the constriction point of the chromosome?
Centromere
Describe metacentric
-Centromere is positioned in the middle of the chromsome
-P and q arms are of equal length
Describe submetacentric
-Centromere is positioned higher towards one end
-q arms approx twice the length of the shorter p arms
Describe acrocentric
-Centromere is positioned very close to one end
-p arms are very short and q arms are long
Describe telocentric
-Centromere is positioned at the tip of the chromosome
-no p arms
-think of “telophase”
How does complexity of an organism relate to the number of chromosomes it has?
There is no correlation
