65. High Performance and Complex Airplanes Flashcards
How is a high performance airplane defined?
An airplane that contains a piston engine rated over 200 horsepower.
What is a good practice when flying a retractable gear airplane?
Re-check that the gear is down and locked on base, final approach, and again when flying over the “fence” at the edge of the airport.
What is a good rule of thumb for engine management during a descent in a high performance airplane?
Reduce the power by only one or two inches of manifold pressure per minute.
When should you retract the landing gear after takeoff?
Once a landing can no longer be made on the remaining runway.
When increasing power, what is the recommended sequence for usage of the manifold pressure and RPM controls?
Increase RPM first, and then increase manifold pressure.
When it comes time to reduce power, what is the recommended sequence for usage of the manifold pressure and RPM controls?
Reduce manifold pressure first, and then RPM.
How is a Technically Advanced Aircraft (TAA) is defined?
- An airplane containing an electronic Primary Flight Display
- Multi Function Display
and
- two-axis autopilot.
How is a complex airplane defined?
An airplane that has a
- controllable pitch propeller,
- retractable landing gear,
and
- wing flaps.
What is one possible drawback of a fuel injection system on piston aircraft?
Vapor lock.
How will cowl flaps be set during the cruise portion of the flight?
Closed unless in very hot temperatures.
What do you need to have to act as pilot in command of either a complex or high performance airplane?
Received and logged ground and flight instruction from an authorized instructor in such an airplane and the instructor has certified in your logbook that you are competent to fly such airplanes.
What training is required to act as pilot in command of a technically advanced airplane (TAA)?
There is no checkout or endorsement required to fly a TAA.
In a complex airplane, what does the throttle control?
Engine manifold pressure.
With a variable pitch propeller, if you set a high RPM position, what is the pitch of the propeller?
Low pitch.
How should you reduce propeller and engine noise after takeoff?
Reduce RPM when reaching a safe altitude.
