14. Supp: Indications and Codes Flashcards
It tells the pilot how fast the aircraft is flying in knots.
Green - normal operations
Yellow - caution range
White - safe to put flaps down without them being ripped of by wind
Red - never exceed speed. In this range, pressure can tear out rivets and destroy the plane
Air Speed Indicator
It shows what direction you are heading. It acts like a compass, but you cannot call it a compass.
Heading indicator
It tells the pilot the rate of climb (up) or descent (down) in feet and per minute. If the arrow is at 10 on the top half, that means the aircraft is climbing at 1000 ft per minute
Vertical Speed Indicator
It indicates how high the plane is flying above sea level and shows it in 100 segments. Eg. 100ft, 200ft… 1000ft. It works like a clock. The small hand always points to the number that is in thousands. The small hand points to the number in hundreds. For example, if the small hand is pointing to the 2 and the big hand is at 8, that would mean the aircraft is at 2800 ft.
