6.4.2 Protozoa Flashcards
Are Protozoa eukaryotic or prokaryotic?
Eukaryotic (genetic information: chromosomes in nuclear membrane)
Are protozoa motile
Yes
How can protozoa locomote?
Cilia
Pseudopodia
Glide
Flagellum
Discuss the nutrition and digestion of protozoa:
Pinocytosis (fluid droplets) and phagocytosis (larger particles)
How do protozoa reproduce?
Asexual - binary fission and schizogony and sporogony
Sexual - sporozoa
Sometimes both
what does homoxenous and heteroxenous and facultatively heteroxenous mean?
Homoxenus - single host species during its life cycle (direct)
Heteroxenous - multiple hosts during its life cycle (indirect)
Facultative heterogenous - may be more than one host but not required
Breifly describe the coccidian life cycle (protozoa)
host eats oocyst
oocyst breaks down to release sporoziotes
asexual multiplication in intestines
schizont grows and ruptures
meroziote causes 2nd gen formation
sexual reproduction
microgametocyte ruptures (lumen) to fertilise macrogametocyte to form zygote
oocyst formed > sprogomny > sporocyst
sporocyst is infective when ingested.
