6.4- Lewis Structure Diagrams Flashcards
What is the correct definition of a valence electron?
The only electrons that partake in chemical bonding.
What do you call a simplified diagram that communicates molecular structure?
Lewis Structure.
What are the three basic components of a lewis structure?
- Element’s symbol
- Dots to represent nonbonding electrons in valence shells
- Lines to represent pairs of bonding electrons.
What is a hybrid orbital?
When atoms form bonds, their s and p orbitals form four equivalent hybrid orbitals.
Which rule do you fill up hybrid orbitals by?
Hunds rule, now that the s and p orbitals are equal they each fill individually before doubling on electrons.
What do you need to know to draw a lewis structure for a single atom?
- Element’s symbol
- How many valence electrons it has
The first row of electrons only have which orbitals?
s orbitals, max of two electrons.
Which is the only main group element that doesn’t max out at 8 valence electrons?
Helium.
Elements in rows what through what will fill their s and p orbitals in a chemical bond?
Rows 2-7.
