6.4 Corrosion Flashcards
What is corrosion?
A natural phenomenon whereby chemical or electrochemical reactions cause metals to be oxidised, forming salts and oxides of the metal.
If corrosion occurs at boundaries between regions what is the result?
Pits and intergranular corrosion.
For corrosion to form what three condition must be met?
An electrical potential difference within the metal.
A conductive path between the two areas of potential difference.
Some form of electrolyte or fluid covering the two areas.
What is electrolytic corrosion due to?
Due to an electrolyte (for example water) and the flow of an electrical current between the two metals
What two categories of bacteria are there?
Aerobic
Anaerobic
How do aerobic bacteria accelerate corrosion?
Oxidising sulphur to produce sulphuric acid.
What are the ideal growth conditions for micro-organisms?
Temperatures of 20 °C - 40 °C and relative humidity of 85% - 100%.
What is stress corrosion?
Growth of crack formation in a corrosive environment.
What is filiform corrosion?
Worm like trace, oxygen concentration cell corrosion.
Where does filiform corrosion occur?
Metal surfaces with an organic coating
What conditions are needed for filiform?
78-90% humidity and slightly acidic surface
What can filiform lead too?
Intergranular
How is filiform removed?
Glass beading
Is there any indication of pitting on the surface?
No
What is exfoliation corrosion?
An advanced form of intergranular.
