9
Q

How does the envelope method of fabric covering work?

A

Made from the patterns for the various surfaces and are loose enough to slip them over the structure but still achieve the required tautness when doped.

16
Q

Where is boom stringing used?

A

Used on deep aerofoil sections, the cord goes around the rib boom instead of the entire rib.

17
Q

What are the most common methods of fabric attachment?

A

Strip
Stringing
Adhesives

18
Q

What is strip attachment of fabrics?

A

Wrapping it around a rod and then securing in a channel or groove.

19
Q

How is fabric attached to plywood?

A

Dope, it should be rubbed down after it has dried with wet and dry.

20
Q

What methods of drainage and ventilation are there?

A

Drainage holes
Drainage eyelets
Shielded eyelets

21
Q

How can the ability to inspect the structure be incorporated into fabric covering?

A

Woods frames
Zip panels
Spring panels

22
Q

What is the major disadvantage of woods inspection frames?

A

A new patch must be doped on each time.

23
Q

What can be repaired using a darning?

A

Irregular holes or jagged tears, provided it’s not bigger than 50mm at any point. Stitches should follow the line of the warp and weft.

24
Q

What dimensions are fabric insertions used for fabric repairs?

A

For damage over 100mm square.

25
Q

Name the two methods used to test fabric?

A

Seyboth and maule.

26
Q

Describe the principles of using a maule tester.

A

Spring loaded instrument with a blunt point. Breaking point of fabric is reached on the scale, if fabric is punctured it fails.

27
Q

Describe the principles of a seyboth tester?

A

The force it takes to pierce the fabric is measured on a coloured scale, all punctures must be repaired.

28
Q

What does doping achieve?

A

Tautening
Waterproofing
Airproofing
Light proofing

29
Q

What dope is used to protect from UV?

A

Aluminium Dope.
