6.2 Simple and giant structures Flashcards
define giant structure
an element or compound that is made up of atoms or ions joined together by strong bonds
define simple structure
an element or compound that is made up of molecules
Giant structures are usually very hard. Use their structure to explain why.
The bonds that hold together the atoms or ions in giant structures are very strong. Therefore, giant structures are very hard.
When giant structures that contain ions are melted they can conduct electricity. Explain why.
These ions are charged particles. When the substance is melted the ions are free to move from place to place - which is moving charge
Why can’t substances with simple structures conduct electricity?
Because they don’t have any charged particles. They don’t have free electrons or ions.
