What is attribution theory?
attempts to explain how individuals view behavior, both our own and the behavior of tohers
What is dispositional attribution?
attributing behaviors to internal causes
What is situational atribution?
attributing behaviors to external causes
What are the three factors that influence whether we attribute behaviors internally or externally?
- consistency
- distinctiveness

What is fundamental attribution error?
we tend to underestimate the impact of the situation and overestimate the impact of a person’s own character or personality
What is the actor-observer bias?
tendency to blame our actions on the situation and blame the actions of others on their personalities
What is self-serving bias?
tendency to attribute successes to ourselves and our failures to others or the external environments
What is optimism bias?
belief the bad things happen to other people but not ourselves
What is the just world phenomenon?
tendency to blieve that the world is fair and people get what they deserve
What is hindsight bias?
tendency to believe that an event was predictable after it has already occurred
What is the halo effect?
tendency to believe that people have inherently good or bad natures rather than looking at individual characteristics
What is the physical attractiveness stereotype?
specific type of halo effect where people tend to rate attractive individuals more favorably for personality traits and characteristics than they do those who are less attractive
What is the definition of social perception?
understanding of others in our social world
What is the definition of social cognition?
ability of the brain to store and process information regarding social perceptions
What is false consensus?
occurs when we assume that everyone else agrees with what we do
