6.2 Hydrocarbons Flashcards
aliphatic hydrocarbons
have branched or unbranched chains or rings of carbon atoms
aromatic hydrocarbons/arenes
contain rings of carbon atoms in which there are delocalised electrons.
saturated compounds
have only single bonds between atoms in their molecules
octane number
a measure of the performance of a fuel in comparison with2,2,4 - trimethylpentane (100 score) and heptane ( 0 score)
unsaturated
compounds that contain one or more double or triple bonds between atoms in their molecules
E/Z isomerism
occurs when there is restricted rotation around a double bond and also different groups are attached at each end end of the bond.
stereoisomerism
occurs with the same molecular and structural formulae’s but different spatial arrangement.
carbocation
a reactive species which contains a carbon atom with a positive charge
intermediates
atoms, molecules, ions or free radicals which dont appear in overall equation for a reaction, but are formed in one step of a reaction and used in the next
inductive effect
describes the way in which electrons are either pushed towards or pulled away from a carbon atom by the atoms or groups in which it is bonded
