6.2 Flashcards
Leukocytes in the granular category have:
Granules in the cytoplasm and lobed or segmented nuclei
White blood cells are divided into two general categories on their basis of their histological appearance:
Granular (or polymorphonuclear)
And agranular
Leukocytes in the agranular category
Lack visible cytoplasmic granules and have unlobed nuclei
Granular Leukocytes are distinguished by their
Affinity for specific stains
Eosinophils stain
Bright red
Basophils
Stain dark blue
Neutrophils
Are clear.
Due to their low affinity for staining
Granular Leukocytes contain:
Eosinophils
Basophils
Neutrophils
Agranular Leukocytes include:
Lymphocytes &
Monocytes
Lymphocytes
Are easily identified by their round nuclei and scant cytoplasm
Monocytes
Are also identified by their appearance of short, blunt, cytoplasmic extensions. However, monocytes are much larger then lymphocytes
Leukocytes (WBCs) can leave the vascular system and enter the connective tissue of the body by
Squeezing through capillaries
This is known as diapedesis or extravasation
What happens during inflammation?
Histamine is released from tissue mast cells and basophils. Histamine increases the permeability of the capillaries- promoting diapedesis.
Neutrophils and eosinophils destroy the invading pathogens
Phangocytosis
