6.10 Flashcards
what are the advantages of control cables
strong, light weight, flexible, can be set up without backlash and high mechanical efficiency
what are the disadvantages of control cables
tension must be adjusted constantly, wear at points of contact, tension varies with temperature
what is a strand
a number of wires braided together
what is a cable
a number of strands braided together
what is a regular lay
strands and wires are twisted in opposite directions to stop uncoiling
what is a lang lay
strands twisted around a central core
what are the 4 common types of steel cable used
non flexible 1x7
non flexible 1x19
flexible 7x7
flexible 7x19
when are non flexible cables used
only for straight runs which do not pass over any pulleys
when is a flexible 7x7 cable used
for straight runs or passing over large pulleys
when is an extra flexible 7x19 cable used
when a cable must change direction over a relatively small pulley
what are terminal fitting generally
swaged
what are the fittings for a cable end fitting
threaded, fork, eye, single shank and double shank ball ends
what fittings are used for linkage in the system
threaded, fork and eye ends
when are the ball terminals used
attaching cables to quadrants and special connection where there is limited space
what is a lock clad cable
a cable that has swaged aluminium alloy tubing on the outside of the cable
