6.1 Exploring Polygons Flashcards
convex polygon
no line that contains a side of the polygon contains a point that is in the interior of the polygon
polygon
a plane figure that is formed by 3 or more segments, called sides, so that 2 things are true:
- each side intersects EXACTLY 2 other sides, once at each endpoint
- no two sides with a common endpoint are collinear
concave polygon (aka ??)
(aka non-convex)
at least one line that contains a side of the polygon contains a point that is in the interior of the polygon
rubberband test
if a rubberband would fit snuggly around all sides of the shape, it’s convex
names of polygons-based on # of sides 3 sides- 8 sides- 4 sides- 9 sides- 5 sides- 10 sides- 6 sides- 12 sides- 7 sides- n sides-
triangle octagon quadrilateral nonagon pentagon decagon hexagon dodecagon heptagon n-gon(# of sides-gon)
how do you name a polygon?
list its vertices consecutively
diagonal
a segment that joins two nonconsecutive vertices
equilateral polygon
ALL sides are congruent
equiangular polygon
ALL INTERIOR angles are congruent
does an equilateral polygon have to be equiangular and vice versa?
NO!!!
regular polygon
a polygon that is equilateral AND equiangular
