(6091) Static Electricity Flashcards
how do like charges act?
they repel
how do unlike charges act?
they attract
how does distance affect the strength of the charge?
the further the charges are, the weaker the forces between them
what is an electric field?
a region in which an electric charge experiences a force
what is charging?
transfer of electrons from one material to another
what is induction?
the process of charging an object using another charged object placed nearby it
what is earthing?
the process of neutralizing a charged object by removing excess charges
how do you charge an insulator?
friction
using friction, which object gains electrons and which one loses?
the material that gains electrons is rubbing and the material that loses elctrons is rubbed
why can insulators not be charged?
they do not have delocalised electrons
how is a conductor charged?
either through contact or through high voltage
how is a conductor charged via contact?
a charged conductor can charge a neutral conductor by contact, and they will boith share the same postive/negative charge
how is a conductor charged via high voltage?
by connecting a conductor to one terminal of a high voltage, where the conductor will have similar charge to the terminal connected
when an electron is added, what charge does the object have?
it is a negative charge
when an electron is removed, what charge does the object have?
it is a positive charge
