(6091) Electromagnetic Induction Flashcards
what is electromagnetic induction?
an electromotive force is induced in a conductor by a changing magnetic field
what are two ways to induce emf via electromagnetism?
moving a straight wire quickly across the magnetic field of magnets + moving a permanent magnet towards one end of a solenoid
what is used to determine the direction of an induced current?
flemings right hand rule where thumb = motion, pointer = field, middle = current
how is emf induced in a solenoid?
when a magnet moves towards/away a solenoid, its magnetic field will cut across the turns of wire of the solenoid, hence induced emf is produced in the solenoid
how is the polarity of the solenoid decided when there is a changing magnetic field?
the direction of the induced current in a solenoid always flow in the direction in such a way that it opposes the change producing it
what is the polarity of the solenoid if a magnet is moved towards it?
the pole that goes into the solenoid is the one the corresponding side will be
