First Pesian Empire founded by Cyrus the Great, first centralized nation-state. Expansion in 550-500BCE. Ruled over significant portions of the ancient world.
Alexander the Great
Conquered Greek city-states and the Persian Empire. Spread Greek language and culture. Free trade within his empire. The empire split into 3 after his death.
Hellenism
Greek culture blended with local cultures.
Augustus
The first emperor of ancient Rome, came to power after Julius Caesars assassination. Restored the republic of Rome.
Pax Romana
The period from 27 BCE to 180 CE where there was peace and economic prosperity throughout the Roman Empire.
Legalism
In ancient China: A philosophical belief that humans are more inclined to do wrong than right as they are motivated by self-interests. They required strict laws to control their impulses.
Confucianism
In China: Emerged around the same time as Hinduism, had historical founder Siddhartha Gautama, a prince from a small kingdom. His followers compiled his writings into a book, The Analects. Became the official ideology of the Chinese state in 200 BCE after China was reunited by the Han Dynasty. Moral behavior, not law, more education, exams.
Hinduism
India: Oldest, largest, and most prominent in India and had no founder. Spread into southeast Asia later. Diversity of gods, spirits, beliefs, practices, and rituals. Upanishads, sacred texts from between 800 and 400 BCE. Reincarnation.
Siddhartha Gautama
The founder of Confucianism whos writings were compiled.
Saint Paul of Tarsus
A convert who spread Christianity.
Jesus of Nazareth
A young craftsmen who was executed for being a political rebel. Christianity started because of him.
Aristotle
A Greek philosopher and scientist from 284-322 BCE who pioneered systematic, scientific examination in every area of human knowledge.
Mauryan Empire
321-185 BCE. Covered most of the Indian region, spanned across central and northern India as well as over parts of modern-day Iran.
Han Dynasty
206BCE-220CE. Many achievements, including the development of civil service and government structure. Scientific advancements such as the invention of paper, and sundial.
Qin Shinhuangdi
Founder of the Qin Dynasty and first emperor of unified China. Contribution to the Great Wall of China.
