6. TMJ Counterstrain Flashcards
1
Q
Primary cause of TMJ-D?
Treatment?
A
Teeth malocclusion;
Tx = bite splint
2
Q
How to asses TMJ?
A
1. Clench jaw
- Evaluates function of temporalis, masseter, and medial pterygoid
2. Open mouth slowly, while putting fingers anterior to tragus, Note deviations
- C-shaped deviation: unilateral problem, deviates toward side of dysfunction
- S-shaped deviation: bilateral problem
- Retract, protrude mandible and move jaw R => L => fingers still anterior to tragus
- Moving to the RIGHT & forward evaluates: Left medial & lateral pterygoid
- Moving to the LEFT & forward evaluates: Right medial & lateral pterygoid
4. Depress jaw against mild resistance
- Evals: Digastric and suprahyoid muscles
3
Q
clenching jaw evals what muscles
A
masseter
temporalis
medial pterygoid
4
Q
Moving jaw to the RIGHT & forward evaluates what muscles
A
left medial and lateral pterygoid
5
Q
Moving jaw to the LEFT & forward evaluates what muscles
A
R medial & lateral pterygoid
6
Q
Depressing jaw against resistance tests what muscles
A
- Digastric
- Suprahyoid muscles
7
Q
Treatments for TMJ
A
- Palpate common irritated muscles: SCM and temporalis)
-
Soft tissue
- Hypertonic temporalis muscle
- Mandible restricted to lateral translation
- Medial pterygoid ST
-
Myofascial Release (MFR)
- Temporalis
- Muscles of mastication
- Muscle energy (MET) to muscles of mastication/mandibular depression restriction
8
Q
TMJ Counterstrain Points
A
- Medial pterygoid
- Masseter muscle
- TMJ
9
Q
Medial pterygoid TP
A
- Medial aspect of ascending ramusl; anterior to the angle of the jaw
- Treatment position: move mandible AWAY
10
Q
Massater TP
A
- Belly of the massater muscle, inferior to zygoma (have pt clench jaw)
- Deviate mandible TOWARDS TP
11
Q
TMJ TP
A
- Anterior of tragus, opposite of mandibular deviation
- Rotate head away
