Q

How to asses TMJ?

A

1. Clench jaw

  • Evaluates function of temporalis, masseter, and medial pterygoid

2. Open mouth slowly, while putting fingers anterior to tragus, Note deviations

  • C-shaped deviation: unilateral problem, deviates toward side of dysfunction
  • S-shaped deviation: bilateral problem
  1. Retract, protrude mandible and move jaw R => L => fingers still anterior to tragus
  • Moving to the RIGHT & forward evaluates: Left medial & lateral pterygoid
  • Moving to the LEFT & forward evaluates: Right medial & lateral pterygoid

4. Depress jaw against mild resistance

  • Evals: Digastric and suprahyoid muscles
