A
- focused on establishing a socialist Ireland
- violence was used until a ceasefire was called on May 1972
- In 1974 it split again to form IRSP and militant INLA

British Army conflict with IRA (3)
A
- In July the army imposed a 34-hour curfew on the Lower Falls area of Belfast while a house to house weapons search was being carried out
- Success: A number of weapons and explosives were discovered
- Downfall: The search was a disaster politically. It damaged the army’s previously good relationships with the nationalist community and increased IRA membership
