Popular Sovereignty
The people hold the ultimate power/authority in a government
This is established in the Preamble
Limited Government
The government has only as much power as the people give it
Separation of Powers
Power is divided; no one holds too much power
- Legislative Branch (Congress): law-making
- Executive Branch (President): enforces the laws
- Judicial Branch (Courts): interprets the laws
Checks and Balances
An extension of the Separation of Powers
Judicial Review
Federal courts have the power to review government laws and actions and to nullify (cancel) any that are unconstitutional
Federalism
Powers are divided between the National Government (Federal) and the State Governments
The Federal government has the “Supreme Power” over state government laws
