6. Organic molecules ( POLYMERS) Flashcards
Methods of disposal for waste polymers
- incineration
- recycling and sorting
- feedstock for cracking
What is incineration of waste polymers
rubbish is burnt and energy is produced and used to generate electricity however toxins and greenhouse gases are released
recycling of waste polymers advantages and disadvantages
+ saves raw materials (crude oil)
- collecting and sorting is expensive
What is feedstock for cracking
where the polymers can undergo cracking to form smaller molecules to make other chemicals and polymers - saving raw materials
How do chemists limit problems caused by polymer disposal
1) developing biodegradable polymers
2) removing toxic gases caused by incineration eg neutralising the HCl released
Describe how to draw process of polymerisation
When drawing the molecule, you only have the C=C bond shown. all other bits should be attached to the C=C.
To show a polymer, remove the double bond and add brackets. Extend the lines from the carbon through the brackets. Add an n outside of brackets
To draw repeat units, draw the polymer however many number of times required.
