6) Kinetic Theory and Heat Transfer Flashcards
What is the conduction?
The energy that is passed from one particle to another via contact
What is convection?
When particles rise because of their energy. The space they leave are filled with new particles. If the source continues, they will rise too.
What is radiation?
Heat that is transferred as infra-red light
How is convection good in our daily life?
Convection is good as it distributes heat energy. For example, a radiator will eventually heat up a whole room.
What is an insulator?
Something that is bad at conducting heat; it will keep the temperature for a long period of time. Air is a bad conductor, so anything with air pockets are insulators
How do solids turn into a liquid?
When solid particles gain energy, they move a lot more. This means that if they move enough, then they will bounce off each other and form a liquid.
How do liquids turn into a gas?
When liquid particles gain energy, they move lot more. This means that if they move enough, then they will bounce off each other and form a gas.
What are the arrangements and motions of particles in a solid?
Low amounts of energy, they have little movement, they vibrate on the spot
What are the arrangements and motions of particles in a liquid?
Some energy and movement, particles collide, bouncing apart and creating space between particles
What are the arrangements and motions of particles in a gas?
Lots of energy and mvoement, particles collide a lot, bouncing apoart more creating more space between particles
