What is myology?
The study of the nature, structure, function of diseases of the muscles.
Describe mandible.
The largest and strongest bone of the face. Lower jaw bone.
What are the three parts of a muscle?
Origin, belly and insertion.
What is the orbicularis oculi?
The muscle that enables you to close your eyes. Surrounds the eye.
What is another name for striated?
Voluntary muscles that can be controlled by will.
Describe epicranius.
The broad muscle that covers the top of the skull.
What includes a nucleus, organelle, cytoplasm and cell membrane?
Principle parts of a cell.
What is anabolism?
A process in which the body stores water, food and oxygen building up larger molecules from smaller ones. Cell growth and repair.
What is metabolism?
The chemical process that turns fuel into energy: anabolism and catabolism.
What do cells need in order to grow and thrive?
Proper temperature, eliminate waste products, and adequate food and water.
What is protoplasm?
A colorless, jelly like substance in which food elements and water are present.
Where is the nucleus located? What important role does it play?
In the center of the cell. Important role: reproduction.
Define cytoplasm.
All of the protoplasm of a cell except that which is in the nucleus. The watery fluid containing food material necessary for cell growth, reproduction and repair.
What is the lower jawbone, which is the largest and strongest bone of the face?
Mandible
What is another name for adipose tissue? What does it do?
Fat. Gives smoothness and contour to the body.
Define catabolism.
When compounds are broken down into smaller ones.
What is tissue?
Collection of similar cells that perform a particular function.
What is epithelial?
Protective covering on the body’s surface. Skin, mucous membranes, lining of the heart, digestion and respiratory glands.
What are supinators?
Muscles that rotate the radius outward and the palm upward.
What are biceps?
Muscles that produce the contour of the front and inner side of the upper arm. Lifts forearms and flex at elbow.
