6. Foot Workshop Flashcards
What is the name of the joint between the talus and the calcaneus?
Subtalar Joint
What 2 joints does the mid tarsal joint comprise of?
Calcaneocuboid and talocalcaneonavicular
What anatomical structures form the tarsometatarsal joint?
Cuneiformis/cuboid proximally and the metatarsals
What type of joints are the MTP and interphalangeal joints?
Synovial
What is the plantar aponeurosis? What is it’s function?
Thickened central area of the plantar fascia- supports the arches of the foot and protects against puncture wounds
What bones form the medial longitudinal arch?
Calcaneus, talus, navicular, 3 cuniforms and metatarsals 1-3
Which muscles support the medial longitudinal arch?
Flexor hallucis longus and attachments of tibialis anterior and fibularis longus
Where does the tibialis anterior attach?
The junction between the medial cuneiform and base of 1st metatarsal
Where does the fibularis longus attach?
Tendon passes across plantar aspect of the foot to attach to medial cuneiform and base of 1st metatarsal
What bones from the lateral longitudinal arch?
Calcaneus, cuboid and metatarsals 4&5
What bones form the transverse arch?
Cuboid, cuneiforms and bases of all 5 metatarsals
What muscles support the transverse arch?
Fibularis longus & tibialis posterior
How many layers are the intrinsic muscles of the foot arranged into?
3
What is the dorsalis pedis artery a branch of?
Anterior tibial artery
Where is the pulse taken for the dorsalis pedis artery?
Lateral to the extensor hallucis longus tendon
