2. Gluteal Region Flashcards
List the superficial gluteal muscles
Gluteus maximus, medius, minimus
Tensor fascia latae
What are the attachments of the gluteus maximus?
Proximally: Iliac crest, sacrum, sacrotuberous ligament and coccyx
Distally: iliotibial tract, gluteal tuberosity of the femur
Which muscle is the most powerful extensor of the hip?
Gluteus maximus
What nerve supplies the gluteus maximus?
Inferior gluteal nerve
What bony feature do the gluteus medius and minimus attach to?
Greater trochanter of the femur
What nerve supplies the gluteus medius and minimus?
Superior gluteal nerve
Damage to to the gluteus medius/minimus or their nerve supply results in what clinical sign?
Trendelenburg’s gait- tilting of the hips
Where does the inferior gluteal neurovascular bundle lie?
Deep to the gluteus maximus
Where does the superior gluteal neurovascular bundle lie?
Deep to the gluteus medius
What is the function of the deep gluteal muscles?
Lateral rotation of the hip
List the deep gluteal muscles
Piriformis
Obturator internus
Gemelli
Quadratus femoris
What is the iliotibial tract?
Thickening of the fascia lata
Where is the iliotibial tract?
Runs from the ASIS to the lateral aspect of the lateral tibial condyle at the Gerdy tubercle
What is the function of the iliotibial tract?
supports the knee joint
What is the largest nerve in the body? What spinal nerve roots does it consist of?
Sciatic nerve (L4-S3)
