5. Knee, Anterior + Lateral Leg Flashcards
What type of joint is the knee joint?
Synovial hinge joint
How many articulations does the knee joint have?
3
What ligaments help to stabilise the knee joint?
Iliotibial tract
The tibial and fibular collateral ligaments
The cruciate ligaments
What are the menisci?
Discs of fibrocartilage that act as shock absorbers + help stabilisation
Where are the menisci thicker?
Peripherally where they are attached to the fibrous capsule
What abnormalities of knee alignment are associated with loss of the medial/lateral menisci?
Genu varum (bandy legs) Genu Valgam (knock knees)
What is the role of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)?
Prevents anterior displacement of the tibia on the femur and hyperextension of the knee joint
How does the ACL pass to attach to the lateral femoral condyle?
superiorly, laterally and posteriorly
What is the role of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)?
Prevents posterior displacement of the tibia on the femur and hyeprflexion of the knee joint
Which lies medially, the ACL or PCL?
PCL
How does the PCL pass to attach to the medial femoral condyle?
Superiorly and anteriorly
How is the integrity of the cruciate ligaments assessed?
The anterior/posterior drawer test
What is the suprapatellar bursa?
an extension of the synovial cavity
What is the function of the suprapatellar bursa?
Reduces friction on the quadriceps tendon during knee movements
Abnormal fluid in the supra patellar bursa causes swelling. Where is the swelling visible?
The lower third of the anterior thigh
