6. Emergency Situations and Challenging Conditions Flashcards
Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
- Allow you to steer while breaks are being applied
- Can break as hard as you want without loosing your ability to steer
How to brake in a Emergency
- Apply steady pressure on brake pedal
- Do not pump or release the brake
- Look and steer in the direction you want to go
Locked Brakes
- In vehicles without ABS braking hard can stop wheels from rolling (become “locked”)
- This can cause you to loose steering control
Threshold Braking
Braking without ABS
- Press on the brake pedal to the point just before the wheels lock
- Look and steer in the direction you want to go
- If wheels lock, release brake pedal slowly to regain control then press brake pedal again without blocking wheels
Skidding
- Means you have lost control of your vehicle
- Can result from driving errors, road surface, speed of car etc.
Driving Errors that Cause Skidding
- Driving to quickly
- turning steering wheel to sharply
- Turning steering wheel to much
- Braking to firmly
- Accelerating to quickly
Acceleration Skid
- Occurs when driver accelerates to quickly, causing wheels to spin
Cornering Skid
- Occurs when driver is accelerating to fast when turning
- Causes vehicle to slide sideways
Off-Road Recovery
- Keep firm grip on steering wheel
- Do not steer vehicle back on road immediately
- Take foot off gas pedal to reduce speed
- Avoid braking
- Check for traffic before going back on road
6.Return to road gradually and turn into a straightened line
Brake Failure
- Failure of Brakes
- Most cars have measures incase this happens
Power Steering Failure
- Can still steer vehicle if power steering fails
- Will have to use extra effort
Headlight Failure
- Turn on hazard lights
- Turn headlight control on and off
- If headlights are still not on reduce speed and move to emergency stopping lane or safe place
What should you do if your tire goes flat?
- Don’t press on brakes
- Take foot off gas pedal to slow down
- Hold steering wheel with a firm grip
- Apply brake with gentle pressure
- Move to the emergency lane or edge of road
- Turn on hazard warning lights
Driving at NighWhat should you turn on when you can’t Cleary see while driving?
- Headlights
- Use low bean headlights with oncoming traffic
- Properly aim headlights
- Avoid looking at oncoming headlights
Glare
- Light from sun or reflections that make it difficult to see the road
Fix: reduce speed
Smoke and Fog
Fix: use low beam headlights. If not safe to drive, slow down and move vehicle to safe place
Rain
Fix: use low beam headlights
Hydroplanning
- When tires loose contact with roads surface
Fix: same fix as skidding
Ice and Snow
Fix:
- maintain vehicle
- allow more time and distance fir stopping and starting
What should a driver do if stranded on highway in ice and snow?
- Stay in vehicle and run engine just enough to stay warm
- Open window slightly too prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
What should a driver do if involved in a collision?
- Exchange contact information
- Record information of witnesses
- Do nit discuss who was at fault
- Record important details of scene
- Notify Insurance company
Motorcycles must slow down to 60km/hr when passing tow trucks
