Traffic Control Signals
- Lights that use colors green, yellow, and red to control traffic
- Used at intersections and when roads merge
- Determines which stream of traffic has the right of way
Solid Red Light
- Drivers facing a red light must bring their vehicle to a complete stop in front of crosswalk or stop line in front of the vehicle
- Vehicles must remain stopped until light turns green unless turning right after stopping
Solid Double Red Light
- Means same thing as single solid red light
What do you do if there is no stop line or crosswalk in front of your vehicle in a red light?
- Driver must stop before the intersection
Can you turn right at a red light? Why can’t you turn left?
- Yes as long as no sign is prohibiting the turn. You must come to a complete stop and yield to other traffic before turning
- No. Turning left requires crossing over two streams of traffic and could cause more accidents. Only time a left our. is permitted is from a one-way to a one-way street.
Solid Yellow Light
- Warns that light will change to red
- Drivers must stop or clear the intersection
- Drivers approaching a yellow light must stop by at the crosswalk or stopping line of the intersection unless the driver has reached a point where it is unsafe to stop
- Drivers in an intersection with a yellow light must safely clear the intersection
Solid Green Light
- Drivers facing a solid green light are permitted to drive through the intersection without stopping unless yielding to traffic when turning right or left
Stale Green Light
- Light has been green for a while and will turn yellow soon
How do you check toes if the green light will turn yellow?
- If the pedestrian walk sign at the intersection shows the WALK symbol the light will stay green. If it shows the DON’T WALK symbol the green light will turn yellow.
Green Arrow with Green Light
- Drivers facing this sign may enter the intersection and proceed without yielding in the direction indicated by the arrow
Green Arrow with Red Light
- Drivers facing this sign may enter the intersection and proceed without stopping only in the direction indicated by the arrow
Flashing Yellow Light
- Drivers facing this sign may enter the intersection while preceding with caution after yielding to traffic and pedestrians
Flashing Green Light
- Drivers facing this light may enter the intersection and turn left or right without stopping
- Opposing streams of traffic will face a red light
- Driver must still yield to other drivers and pedestrians
Flashing Red Light
- Treated as a stop sign
- Driver must stop before the crosswalk or stop line and only proceed when safe
What happens when the lights in the stop signs in all directions flash red?
- Intersection becomes a four way stop
Yellow lights on sign with a symbol indicate that?
- Caution is required because of school zones, playground zones, etc.
Solid Red X
- Indicated that lane is being used for oncoming traffic
- When displayed over driving lane driver cannot enter or must leave lane
- Driver must move into a lane with a green arrow
Downwards Pointing Green Arrow
- Tells driver that it is ok to drive in that lane
Speed Limit Signs
- Speed limits indicate the maximum speed drivers can travel under ideal conditions
- Any speed that is unsafe for the current conditions in illegal
Ex. maximum = 100

- 80km/hr unless otherwise posted

What is the maximum speed limit on roadway that is located within a city?
- 50km/hr
How can you identify a provincial highway?
- You will see either a single-digit, two-digit or a three digit highway route marker
