Traffic Control Signals
- Lights that use colors green, yellow, and red to control traffic
- Used at intersections and when roads merge
- Determines which stream of traffic has the right of way
Solid Red Light
- Drivers facing a red light must bring their vehicle to a complete stop in front of crosswalk or stop line in front of the vehicle
- Vehicles must remain stopped until light turns green unless turning right after stopping
Solid Double Red Light
- Means same thing as single solid red light
What do you do if there is no stop line or crosswalk in front of your vehicle in a red light?
- Driver must stop before the intersection
Can you turn right at a red light? Why can’t you turn left?
- Yes as long as no sign is prohibiting the turn. You must come to a complete stop and yield to other traffic before turning
- No. Turning left requires crossing over two streams of traffic and could cause more accidents. Only time a left our. is permitted is from a one-way to a one-way street.
Solid Yellow Light
- Warns that light will change to red
- Drivers must stop or clear the intersection
- Drivers approaching a yellow light must stop by at the crosswalk or stopping line of the intersection unless the driver has reached a point where it is unsafe to stop
- Drivers in an intersection with a yellow light must safely clear the intersection
Solid Green Light
- Drivers facing a solid green light are permitted to drive through the intersection without stopping unless yielding to traffic when turning right or left
Stale Green Light
- Light has been green for a while and will turn yellow soon
How do you check toes if the green light will turn yellow?
- If the pedestrian walk sign at the intersection shows the WALK symbol the light will stay green. If it shows the DON’T WALK symbol the green light will turn yellow.
Green Arrow with Green Light
- Drivers facing this sign may enter the intersection and proceed without yielding in the direction indicated by the arrow
Green Arrow with Red Light
- Drivers facing this sign may enter the intersection and proceed without stopping only in the direction indicated by the arrow
Flashing Yellow Light
- Drivers facing this sign may enter the intersection while preceding with caution after yielding to traffic and pedestrians
Flashing Green Light
- Drivers facing this light may enter the intersection and turn left or right without stopping
- Opposing streams of traffic will face a red light
- Driver must still yield to other drivers and pedestrians
Flashing Red Light
- Treated as a stop sign
- Driver must stop before the crosswalk or stop line and only proceed when safe
What happens when the lights in the stop signs in all directions flash red?
- Intersection becomes a four way stop
Yellow lights on sign with a symbol indicate that?
- Caution is required because of school zones, playground zones, etc.
Solid Red X
- Indicated that lane is being used for oncoming traffic
- When displayed over driving lane driver cannot enter or must leave lane
- Driver must move into a lane with a green arrow
Downwards Pointing Green Arrow
- Tells driver that it is ok to drive in that lane
Speed Limit Signs
- Speed limits indicate the maximum speed drivers can travel under ideal conditions
- Any speed that is unsafe for the current conditions in illegal

- 80km/hr unless otherwise posted
What is the maximum speed limit on a roadway located outside of an urban area?
- 80km/hr unless otherwise posted
What is the maximum speed limit on roadway that is located within a city?
- 50km/hr
How can you identify a provincial highway?
- You will see either a single-digit, two-digit or a three digit highway route marker
Ex. Alberta 28
School Zone Areas
- School zone can be identified by a school sign with a maximum speed with it.
- Not permitted exceed the maximum speed posted when zone is in effect
- Not permitted to pass vehicles when zone is in effect
What hours are school zones in effect unless otherwise posted?
- 8:00am to 9:30am
- 11:30am to 1:30am
- 3:00pm to 4:30pm
When does a school zone end?
- When a higher maximum speed or end of school zone sign appears
Playground Zone
- Playground zone can be identified by a playground sign with a maximum speed attached to it
- Not permitted to exceed the speed limit posted when zone is in effect
- Not permitted to pass vehicles when zone is in effect
What hours are playground zones in effect unless otherwise posted?
- 8:30 to one hour after sunset
What is the speed limit for rural and urban playground zones unless otherwise posted?
- 30km/hr
When does a playground zone end?
- Where a traffic sign indicates a higher speed or a end of playground zone sign
Playground Area
- Can be identified by a playground sign without a speed limit attached to it
- Alerts drivers that children may be near and to proceed with caution
What do flashing yellow lights at signs mean?
- Make sure driver is pay attain to signs and road
Warning Signs
Warn drivers of:
- A traffic regulation
ex. stop, yield - Features or physical conditions of roads
- Hazards driver might need to respond too
Destination signs
- Provide direction and distance to destination
- Found on highways
Route Markers
- Indicate numbers or names of roads
Slow Moving Vehicle Sign
- Put on vehicles that travel less than 40km/hr
- Warns drivers to be prepared to reduce speed
Oversized Loads
- Indicates that a wide load is being transported
- Warns drivers to use caution when passing vehicles with this sign
What must you do in a construction zone?
- Obey flag persons signal
- Obey speed limit
- Prepare to slow down or stop if required
What hours are construction zones in effect?
- All times
- Applies even when people and equipment are not working as other hazards may be present
What do solid line markings indicate?
- Crossing the line markings to pass vehicles or to change lanes are not permitted
What do broken line markings indicate?
- Crossing the line markings to pass vehicles or to change lanes is permitted
What do yellow line markings indicate?
- Vehicles on opposing lanes must travel in opposite directions
- Line should always be one the leftest side
What do white line markings indicate?
- Vehicles on opposing lanes must travel in the same direction
Arrows
- Indicate vehicle movements permitted in a lane
Dimond Markings
- Indicate vehicle markings are reserved for specific vehicles
- May also indicate times or vehicle restrictions
Bicycle Lanes
- Painted into the curb lane of road with stencils and street signage
- Can also be positioned beside a row of parking stops
Can vehicles enter a bicycle lane?
- Only to turn or to exit or enter a parking spot
- Usually has dashes in corners to show that vehicles are permitted to turn right
- Drivers must take caution when turning in bicycle lanes
