To create an environment in which all participants are able to engage in exercise safely

How does activity history affect a person’s participation in fitness activities?
Past program participation is the most reliable predictor of current participation
What psychological traits are involved in fitness adherence?
General personality tendencies, psychological traits
Eg. Self motivation, setting goals, monitoring progress, and self reinforcing
How do knowledge, attitudes and beliefs affect adherence to exercise?
The way a person thinks and feels about exercise has been shown to influence their intentions regarding being active
E.g. if a persons health perception is poor they are unlikely to start a fitness regimen or if they do exercise it would likely be at a low intensity
What environmental factors affect participation in fitness?
Access to facilities, time and social support
How does location influence participant adherence?
People with greater access to fitness facilities are more likely to be physically active
Instructors can understand the challenges of getting to class and try to facilitate creative options
What is one of the most common reasons individuals use for not exercising?
Lack of time is the most common reason as people perceive that they do not have time to be physically active
This perception is a reflection of a person’s priorities as they might not want to allocate time to something that has been previously unenjoyable
How does social support affect fitness adherence?
Social support is important predictor of physical activity behavior, the instructor should be proactive in creating and establishing a support network for participants to build camraderie with in the class
What are the physical activity factors that affect fitness adherence?
Intensity and injury
What is the relationship between intensity and fitness activity?
The dropout rate in vigourous intensity programs is almost twice as high as in moderate intensity programs
Both women and men more often choose to start with moderate intensity programs
What is the relationship between injury and physical activity?
The higher the level of physical activity, the higher the risk for developing an activity related injury
Instructors must take steps to mitigate injury
How is rapport defined?
A relationship of trust and mutual understanding
How is rapport developed?
Through positive and thoughtful interactions rooted in empathy, attempting to understand what the other person is feeling and experiencing, demonstrating an attitude of caring and concern
What strategies can and instructor use to develop rapport?
Active listening, clear communication, professionalism
What activities can instructors use to learn names?
Icebreakers, using names before class when greeting participants, using names while offering feedback
