What is a pandemic?
An epidemic (so a disease) that occurs worldwide and affects a large number of people
What is the 3rd causing lead of death in the US?
Corona
What were the non-medical consequences of Covid?
Multiple social institutions were overwhelmed (like nurses, doctors, and teachers)
How has the federal government responded to the Covid-19 pandemic?
Through the Cares Act, Consolidation Appropriations Act, the American Rescue Plan, and Stimulus Checks (3)
What were one of the economic aspects of Covid?
there was inflation due to an increase in demand
What is the Cares Act?
The first federal response to the Covid 19 pandemic. They gave 1,200 dollars to individuals (doubled if they were married) and the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance gave individuals 600 dollars per week
What is the Heroes Act?
It was a democratic proposal which was an extension of the first act but did NOT pass the republican Senate
How is the pandemic related to federalism?
So since it’s largely left up to states to determine the appropriate measures to take in regards to public health, there was a widespread of different measures taken to combat the pandemic. Some states did not care whereas others imposed draconian measures to combat the spread
How many people died from Covid?
908,000 people (almost 1 million)
What mandate did Biden try to enforce via Executive action?
By making OSHA require vaccines for its employees. He stated that firms with 100+ employees must require vaccines or conduct weekly testing (which consists of 2/3rds of the labor force)
Why did the Supreme Court strike down Biden’s vaccine mandate?
Because OSHA does not have the authority to compel private firms to require vaccines as condition of their employment
What is the hypocrisy in regards to OSHA and the Supreme Court?
Because the courts said healthcare workers are required to be vaccinated
How are the principles of federalism and separation of powers related to the federal government’s response to Covid?
Due to the divided government, there was a slow response in regards to the pandemic
There was a slow and ineffective federal regulation which is a PERFECT example of collective action failure
