What is the difference between politics and governance?
Politics is a general conflict whereas governance is the PROCESS in which groups collectively establish and implement the rules
What is governance?
The process of creating and implementing the rules
What is government?
the institutions AND procedures through which people are ruled
How are political conflicts settled?
With reference to power, in which the more powerful actor imposes his will on the rest of the group
What is power?
Power is anything that can be used to compel someone to do something they otherwise would not have done
What is democracy?
Democracy is a system of rules that allows citizens to play a significant part in the government process
When it comes to democracy how do people play a significant role in the government process?
By selection of key public officials
What is an example of direct democracy and indirect democracy?
Direct democracy is ancient Greece while indirect democracy is the American republicanism
Democracy places an emphasis on what?
The power of the people and the consent of the governed
What is an oligarchy?
An oligarchy is a form of government in which a small group of wealthy individuals control most government decisions
What are examples of Oligarchy nations?
Saudi Arabia, China, and Russia
What is an autocracy?
An autocracy is a form of government in which a single individual rules (so basically a dictatorship)
What are examples of autocracy?
Saddam Hussien in Iraq, Muammar Gadhafi in Libya, North Korea, and Royal Monarchies
What is an Authoritarian government?
A type of government in which the citizens are expected to submit to authority and there are few formal limits
What is a Totalitarian government
A type of government in which there are no limits on the power of the government. They also work to eliminate any threats that challenge their authority
What is a constitutional government?
A type of government where the powers and limitations are explicitly stated (which means that there is a limitation)
