6 Classes of Enzyme Flashcards
Describe Oxidoreductase:
Enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of a substrate with the simultaneous reduction of another substrate or coenzyme.
Describe Transferases:
Enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of functional groups between acceptors and donors.
Describe Hydrolases:
Enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolytic breakdown of a substrate to 2 products by addition of water.
Describe lyase:
Enzyme that catalyzes the cleavage of bonds.
Describe Isomerase:
Enzyme that catalyzes the changes within one molecule altering the structure but not the atomic composition.
How does isomerase catalyze reactions?
By moving a group from one position to the other.
Describe Ligases or Synthetases:
Enzymes that catalyze synthetic reactions.
How does ligases catalyze reactions?
Links 2 molecules at the expense of ATP by the formation of new: c-c, c-o, c-n, c-s bonds with the simultaneous hydrolysis of ATP.
