Q

Describe the MD80 tail.

A

The empennage consists of a vertical stabilizer, a horizontal stabilizer, two(2) elevators, and a rudder. An ice protected by heat, air conditioning cooling inlet is located on the lower portion of the rudder leading edge. The vertical stabilizer is not anti-iced. The longitudinal stabilizer trims electrically and the leading edge is heated by 8th and 13th stage bleed air. The rudder is normally hydraulically operated but can be mechanically operated in a non hydraulic power situation.
