5G VI Flashcards
On which depends the success of a technology?
Optimize the existing business
Expand the existing business to previously not covered
Expand on new markets
What are the major advantages of the 5G evolution?
Communication can be executed through dedicated networks
Local access networks can use carrier-grade network technologies
Network functions can be placed in different network locations
Describe the network function, the network infrastructure, or the integrated perspectives on 5G
NF : The 5G system should be adaptable enough to run (reliably and secure) on the available infrastructures
Infrastructure : Moving mechanisms from the 5G system level to the new infrastructure middleware
Integrated : Providing a cross-layer communication between the software network and the infrastructure level
Describe at a high level eMBB, mMTC or URLLC use cases
eMBB (Enhanced Mobile Broadband)
i. More capacity per device in specific locations
ii. Wide area consumer communication market
URLLC (Ultra-Reliable, Low Latency Communication)
i. Reduce Delay,
ii. Increase Reliability & Capacity, Availability
mMTC (Massive Machine-Type Communications)
i. Dense IoT environments
ii. Highly distributed world-wide deployments
iii. Capillary networks
What is critical IoT and what are the differences from mMTC
Critical IoT is URLLC
mMTC : low cost, low energy, small data volumes, massive numbers
crit IoT: Ultra reliable, very low latency, very high availability
What is edge computing?
To reach the low delay expectations, the only alternative is to have physically co-located network functions integrated with the local access (more decentralized)
Describe the differences: 4G vs. slicing vs. private networks
4G: The requirements of the use cases are too heterogeneous that a single set of functions could efficiently satisfy all. (4G is uniform for all the use cases)
Slicing: Each of the communication services is supported by a dedicated virtualized network composed of software components customized for the specific requirements
Private Networks: Every enterprise wants an isolated network for themselves independent from general network.
Why use a 5G system instead of a non-3GPP based one?
The 5G system provides an increased level of security and reliability while having a large capacity and low delay
Describe one of the 5G use cases with edge computing
Enterprise networks
Smart office
Unreliable environments
In-car and public transport 5G
Remote eHealth
Smart agriculture
Water management
Public events
Industry 4.0
IoT islands
What carrier-grade functionality is NOT required by the local networks
Deep packet inspection
Slice selection
Lawful interception
Emergency calls
CHF and charging
What elements are local in all the options
Control plane network functions – some control plane functions may be local
UE – the devices should be located at the premises of the local network
gNB – the radio network should cover the UEs connectivity
UPFs – data plane functions to direct specific data flows to the local servers
What are the options for the UE in local networks?
Equivalent Home PLMN (ehPLMN) list
Separate PLMN – the local network is presented as a home network
Fully integrated PLMN – the local network it is not a separate network
What are the options for the gNB in local networks?
The local gNB may be separated in frequency from the rest of the network
Each gNB may advertise a separate PLMN for a specific frequency
What are the options for the core network management in local networks?
Local components will require remote management
Hierarchical network management with local customization and autonomy
How edge nodes could be integrated into a mobile network operator?
The edge node can be integrated into an MNO or in a distributed private network
