Social Aspects of Physical Development:
Common social issues–Sexual activity in teens–STDs–Birth Control and Unplanned pregnancy
Physical Growth:–Timing of Growth:
Boys growth spurts around 13 – 15 and can last up to 16 – 18 y.o.•Girls growth spurts are more gradual and usually stop around 14 – 16 y.o.
Physical Changes:
In the pre-pubescent and pubescent stages, drastic occur in the body from beginning to end–Boys from12 – 18 and girls from 10 – 14
Boys: •Primary Sex Changes
Muscles get thicker and denser–Height increases significantly–Voice lowers and deepens (for many, not all)–Facial hair growth–Sperm production; ejaculation/erections
Boys Secondary Sex Changes
Interest in opposite or same sexual relations–Often interested in competitive activities
Girls: •Primary Sex Changes:
Hips widen and get more definition–Breast development –Menstruation and mature sexual organs»Menarche: First menstrual cycle–Face often lengths, cheeks more pronounced
Girls Secondary Changes:
Interest in opposite or same relationships–Often wants companionship, acceptance and affection

By age 19, 69% of males and 77% of FMs have had sexual intercourse
Puberty and Sexual Relations: STDs–Trends and General Aspects:
bout 50% of 19 million cases a year 15 – 24 y.o.
Most common STD in US – almost 2.3 mill in 2011–Can cause pelvic or penile pain, and possibily sterility
Clamydia
Around 700K per year–Can be spread even by kissing–Can cause pain, discharge and itching in genital or anal areas–Can cause extreme pelvic pain and sterility
Gonorrhea: (“the clap” or “the drip”)
Around 36K cases per year–Not as common as other two but much more deadly. Characterized by crater-like sores on skin–Unborn babies may be infected by mothers–Extreme, untreated cases can cause spreading to key organs of body, causing organ damage or death
Syphilis:
Over 16% of the population is infected–Can be passed to unborn fetuses–Because it’s a virus, can’t be cured
Genital Herpes: (HSV virus)
About 20 million current have HPV–Characterized by genital warts–Not always a lot of symptoms and can be undetected
Human Papillomavirus: (HPV)
Spread by bodily fluids, including intercourse–Many teens are aware of HIV and AIDS but do not feel they are at significant risk for infection
Human Immunodeficiency Virus: (HIV)
