Indications of CPAP

A
  • asthma/COPD (ALS only)
  • pulmonary edema/CHF
    • shortness of breath with wheezes/crackles
    • awake and able to follow commands
    • able to fit within the CPAP mask
    • SBP over 90 mmHg
    • has been using accessory muscles

Contraindications for CPAP

A
  • SBP under 90 mmHg (contact MedCom if you believe the patient will benefit)
  • severe cardiorespiratory distress/impending arrest
  • cardio/respiratory arrest
  • upper airway abnormality/trauma
  • penetrating chest trauma
  • gastric distention
  • compromised thoracic organs
  • persistent N/V
  • inability to protect airway
