- reduction in preload/afterload of the failing heart

Indications of CPAP
A
- asthma/COPD (ALS only)
- pulmonary edema/CHF
- shortness of breath with wheezes/crackles
- awake and able to follow commands
- able to fit within the CPAP mask
- SBP over 90 mmHg
- has been using accessory muscles

Contraindications for CPAP
A
- SBP under 90 mmHg (contact MedCom if you believe the patient will benefit)
- severe cardiorespiratory distress/impending arrest
- cardio/respiratory arrest
- upper airway abnormality/trauma
- penetrating chest trauma
- gastric distention
- compromised thoracic organs
- persistent N/V
- inability to protect airway
