5.3 Molecular Orbital (MO) Model Flashcards
How many e-‘s can a molecular orbital hold?
2, with opposite spins.
What is the molecular orbital model?
A model used to describe bonding that does NOT assume e-‘s are localized and rather e-‘s are paired in molecular orbitals much like in atomic orbitals.
What is a sigma MO?
The e- probability is centered along an imaginary line that passes through the 2 nuclei.
Where is the e- probability for a sigma bonding mo?
Between the 2 nuclei
Where is the e- probability for a sigma antibonding mo?
On either side of the nuclei
What Orbitals are available to e- in MO model?
Only molecular orbitals, the original atomic orbitals of the individual atoms no longer exist.
A bonding MO is ______ in E than the atomic orbitals it is made of.
Lower
Which MO is higher in E than the atomic orbitals it is composed of?
Antibonding
Which type of MO will have e-‘s that favor separate atoms? Which will have e-‘s that favor bonding?
Anti bonding
Bonding
What is bond order?
BO = (# of bonding e-‘s - # of antibonding e-‘s)/2
What is bond order and indication of?
BO indicates bond strength since it reflects the number of bonding vs antibonding e-‘s
Larger BO means
Greater bond strength
What does a BO of 0 mean?
The atoms are more stable separately than together.
