5.3 Making Salts Flashcards

1
Q

describe insoluble base method to make soluble salt (4 points)

1) ____ the a___ so it reacts ______ with the b___
2) while ________, add b___ (solid metal oxide) until __ ____ will ________
3) this means b___ in ______ so all a___ has been ____ __
4) ______ out ______ b___

A

1) heat the acid so it reacts faster with the base
2) while stirring, add base (solid metal oxide) until no more will dissolve
3) this means base in excess so all acid has been used up
4) filter out excess base

Q

describe the titration method to make a soluble salt (3 points)

A

1) perform a titration to measure volumes of acid and alkali to neutralise each other
2) repeat the titration but don’t put in indicator
3) use a burette to add exact volume

Q

describe precipitation method to make insoluble salts eg. BaSO4 (5 points)

A

1) mix 2 solutions, with each of them containing one of the ions of BaSO4
#eg. BaCl2 and Na2SO4, the Cl2 and Na2 are spectator ions, not important#
2) this has now formed a precipitate
3) filter out salt precipitate
4) rinse off salt with water to wash off traces of leftover solution #doesn’t dissolve salt because it is insoluble#
5) dry salt by dapping it with filter paper

Q

Describe method on how to make pure dry crystals

____ (nitric) ____
___ (red) lead oxide (and stir)
______ to obtain lead(II) nitrate solution
____ (lead(II) nitrate) solution/filtrate
leave solution to ____/ leave solution for more
________ to form
______ ___ crystals/lead nitrate
______ the crystals eg using
f_____ _____

A

warm/heat (nitric) acid
add/mix/react (red) lead oxide (and stir)
filter to obtain lead(II) nitrate solution
heat/boil (lead(II) nitrate) solution/filtrate
leave solution to cool / leave solution for more
crystals to form
filter off crystals/lead nitrate
drying the crystals eg using
filter paper/using paper towel/in a warm oven
