5.2.4 Control of body temperature Flashcards
1
Q
What monitors and controls body temperature?
A
2
Q
What does the thermoregulatory centre contain?
A
3
Q
How does the skin help with controlling body temperature as well?
A
4
Q
What happens if the body temperature is too high?
A
- blood vessels dilate (vasodilation) - more blood flows through the skin’s capillaries
- sweat is produced from sweat gland
- both these mechanisms cause a transfer of energy from the skin to the environment
5
Q
What happens if the body temperature is too low?
A
- blood vessels constrict (vasoconstriction) - less blood flows through the skin’s capillaries
- sweating stops
- skeletal muscles contract (shiver) - requires energy so more respiration + some energy is transferred - warming the blood
6
Q
Why does the skin look red when you are hot?
A
due to increased blood flow
7
Q
Explain why sweating cools the body
A
- water in sweat evaporates
- energy is transferred from the skin to turn the water into water vapour
- skin cools down
