5.2.3 The eye Flashcards
What is the eye?
sense organ
containing receptor sensitive to light intensity + colour
Accommodation
process of changing the shape of the lens to focus on near or distant objects
Structure relate to function: retina
Structure relate to function: optic nerve
Structure relate to function: sclera
Structure relate to function: cornea
Structure relate to function: iris
Structure relate to function: ciliary muscles + suspensory ligaments
What are the light rays from close objects like?
spread out
diverging strongly
What are the light rays from distant objects like?
travelling in almost parallel rays
What happens when we try to focus on near objects?
- ciliary muscles contract
- suspensory ligaments loosen
- lens = thicker (more curved)
- reflects light rays strongly
What happens when we try to focus on distant objects?
- ciliary muscles relax
- suspensory ligaments are pulled tight
- lens = pulled thin
- reflects light rays only slightly
How is the light that enters the eye focused?
by refraction
How does the eye adapt to bright light?
- circular muscles ** contract**
- radial muscles relax
- pupil constricts
Why do we have an iris reflex?
- too much light (bright)
- can damage retina
