Q

What is the importance of photosynthesis for consumers and producers

A

it traps the energy from the sun to be transferred through the food chain
consumers (animals) cannot make their own food so they obtain glucose by eating plants

Q

Why does photosynthesis require energy from the sun and store energy?
(Use the concept of bond energy)

A

-As CO2 and H2O in photosynthesis require lots of energy to break but little energy given out when glucose forms.
-Energy needed to build organic molecules from small inorganic molcules gained from the sun

-bonds need energy to be broken + release energy when bonds are formed
-bonds in small inorganic molecules are strong (H2O, CO2)
++ lots of energy to break
++ lots of energy out when they form
- bonds in larger organic molecules are weaker (glucose, amino a)
– little energy to break
– less energy out when they form

Q

Why does respiration release energy that can be used to make ATP?

A
  • in repspiration large organic molecules broken down into small inorganic molecules
The total energy needed to break all the bonds in a large organic molecule (glucose) is less than all the energy released when smaller organic product bonds are made
    – the excess energy released by bond formation is used to make ATP
