3.1.2 Transport In Animals Flashcards
why is animals need a specialised transport system?
(5)
• Diffusion over long distances cannot meet demands -need lots of O2 + food
• larger animal = smaller SA:V
Diffusion distances increase but amount of SA to absorb/remove substances gets smaller
• hormones /enzymes made needed elsewhere
• food needed to reach every cell for respiration + metabolism
• very active -respiring quickly
Does SA:V ratio increase or decrease as an animal grows?
SA:V decreases as animal gets bigger
Does demand for glucose increase as activity levels increase?
Yes
Define mass flow
a transport system where substances are transported in a mass of fluid
Define vascular system
a system of transport vessels in plants or animals
Define open circulatory system
a circulatory system with a heart
Blood isn’t enclosed in blood vessels all the time
Define closed circulatory system
a circulatory system where blood is enclosed in vessels
does not come into direct contact with the cells of the body
Define haemolymph
Blood/transport medium of insects
Define single circulatory system
Circulatory system where blood flows through the heart once for each complete circuit of the body
Define double circulatory system
Circulatory system where the blood passes through the heart twice for each complete circuit of the body
Define pulmonary circulation
Cardiovascular system -
carries DEOXYGENATED blood to to the lungs
Returns OXYGENATED BLOOD back to the heart
Define systemic circulation
Cardiovascular system-
Carries OXYGENATED blood from heart to the body
returns DEOXYGENATED blood back to the heart
