Who does Tropical Sprue effect?
Residents or Visitors to Tropical Areas where there has been an Epidemic
What occurs due to Tropical Sprue?
- Malabsorption

What is the Clinical Presentation of Tropical Sprue?
- Malabsorption
- Diarrhoea
- Weight Loss and Anorexia
- Abdominal Distension
- Nausea and Vomiting
Why does the Weight Loss and Anorexia occur?
Due to the Malabsorption
Why does Nausea and Vomiting occur?
Due to the suspected inefction
What investigations are necessary in Tropical Sprue?
- The Exclusion of other causes
- Malabsorption (Especially Fat and Vitamin B12) Demonstration
- Biopsy
What other cause must be excluded?
Acute Infective causes of Diarrhoea
What will be visible on Biopsy?
Slight Abnormal Villous Atrophy (Not as bad as Coeliac Disease) which appears throughout the whole Bowel
What is the Treatment of Tropical Sprue?
- Leaving the Sprue area (instantly provide mild relief)
- Folic Acid
- Antibiotics
- Vitamin B12 Supplements (In Severe Cases)
- Rehydration Resuscitation
